A friend of mine recently joined Facebook. He’s tech savvy, but had always resisted being part of the 900 million people around the world who are already on Facebook. He found the mobile applications for Facebook to be severely lacking as he was used to the immersive user
experience on Flipboard, Path, Instagram and Twitter. Plus, he doesn’t see additional value with connecting with more brands on Facebook.
Could his experience be a sign of what social networks need to be mindful of in order to stay relevant?

Klout , PeerIndex , Kred – honestly, what’s the difference?

They’re often, one of the first indications of a social media practitioner’s presence on the social web.

A Klout Score of 50+ puts you in the 90th percentile of the population where the average Klout score stands at 20. A PeerIndex Score of 40+ puts you in the 90th percentile of the population while a score of 90+ puts you at the top 0.1% of the community.

Fact: All these scores are just numbers. A numerical peg to your name, if I may add, if you allow Klout, PeerIndex, and Kred to define your personality and social media behaviour.

Are you a banker, an innovator, a technologist, a marketer, or simply someone who would like to meet some of the best and brightest minds in the industry?

I’ll be speaking at Next Bank Asia 2012 (Red Dot Design Museum , May 9-10) and brainstorming together with you on how social media can help achieve your business, engagement, and brand goals. Thanks to the kind folks at IAB Singapore (Interactive Advertising Bureau) for supporting the social media session, and of course, to the founder, Rob, for inviting me to speak at this event.

What I want to highlight today- is a platform you should start looking out for. If you’re into social scoring and online influence measurement systems such as Klout, Kred, and PeerIndex, there’s now a new way for you to measure your “Pinfluence”. Currently, the big guys have not incorporated Pinterest scoring into their algorithm, but I am sure it would change in time to come.

Watch out for Pinpuff, folks. This is going to be a startup to watch.

As a brand, social media can be both exciting and tumultuous.

To do well on social media, it’s critical to really understand the platform. Many brands rewrite promotional messages on these platforms creatively – in a bid to drive a monetisation model to justify their Return on Effort (ROE) or their Return on Investment (ROI).

The truth is that this is just not enough anymore – most of us are not looking to be blasted with a slew of creative promotional messages on social. If we do want to find out more about the sales offerings, or promotions, Google search would suffice – or we can simply sign up for an email newsletter.

It’s official – Timeline for Facebook Brand Pages are here, and will be rolled out for all Facebook Brand Pages come March 30th 2012. Personally, I’m a huge fan of this new product offering – while it certainly does take some getting used to, this allows brands to get more visually creative and tell the stories of their brand histories more effectively. Timeline for a Facebook Brand Page can certainly get more visually stunning if the right steps are taken to humanise their brand.

Foursquare Explore isn’t new. Heck, it was launched in March 2011 on the mobile application. But the Desktop and iPad versions of Foursquare Explore are new- and just launched a few days ago, as announced on their blog. I’ve opened up the page foursquare.com/explore on my iPad, and the interface is gorgeous- really looking like it has been made specially for the iPad junkies who’re constantly on the move.

Being a social media strategist here in Singapore, I recently found myself doing some research into which were the top Facebook Pages in in this country. After a little bit of digging, I’ve come up with the Top 10 Singapore Facebook Pages. And yes, there are more than a few surprises here.

It’s 9am in the morning. You’re awake and on the way to work. You open up Facebook on your iPhone or Laptop and start scrolling through your news feed on Facebook. You notice content from your friends on Facebook. You start liking their status updates on the new Toffee Nut Latte they’re drinking from Starbucks. You comment on a photo of a crazy party you had last weekend.

All this content did not appear on your News Feed by chance. There is a science to it which Facebook has called the Facebook Edgerank. More importantly than ever, the Facebook Edgerank will determine how much of your content you post would be seen by other people.

I’ve always been a massive fan of Twitter and I’ve made no secret of that fact – it’s fantastic as an interest graph for real-time information, connecting with like minded people, and sharing relevant information to people who matter. Moreover, there is so much potential here for brands to conduct real-time engagement and foster an authentic relationship with their consumers.
